Nothing but the experience

Towards the end of my undergraduate degree, I began to explore parts of my own philosophy and understanding; how I see design and where I see myself within the design community. As part of this process, I began to work using new methodologies, applying design in different ways and producing radically different ideas to which I had before. This focused my attention on designing with a purpose and to include the viewer (or end user) in some way.

I found this leap of methodology incredibly fresh and motivating to me, instead of producing work that existed in isolation, I started working towards an inclusive design experience.

However, almost as soon as I had reached this point in my own development, my BA course had ended. With a shake of the hand and a tip of the mortarboard, my time as an undergraduate was over. The Postgraduate degree I am undertaking now allows me to explore these new ideas further. These different design experiences would take all that I had learned about being a graphic designer and combine it with other interests that I already had in architecture and interactive design.

The experience of design and the use of design as an experience to drive a narrative is something that I feel has become increasingly influential in my practice. I feel that good design should not only be sustainable and well though out but also that design is an experience. This experience could be a shared one or a personal one, transcending across many ages and cultures. Good design is an inclusive experience that brings the subject and consumer as close as possible.

The idea of a narrative driven experience is one that I would like to explore further throughout my time on the MA, through a process of enquiry and research, refining how as a designer I can drive a narrative through a designed experience.
